Dental Sealants

Protect vulnerable back teeth from cavities with a quick, painless sealant application.

Dental sealants are thin, protective coatings applied to the chewing surfaces of the back teeth (molars and premolars) to seal out bacteria and food particles. The deep grooves and pits in back teeth are particularly vulnerable to decay because they are difficult to clean thoroughly with a toothbrush.

Sealants are most commonly applied to children's permanent molars as soon as they erupt, but adults without decay or fillings in their back teeth can also benefit. The procedure is quick, painless, and highly effective at preventing cavities.

What to Expect

The Process

1

Tooth Cleaning

The tooth surface is thoroughly cleaned to remove any plaque or debris.

2

Etching

A mild acid solution is applied to the tooth surface to create a slightly rough texture that helps the sealant bond.

3

Sealant Application

The liquid sealant material is painted onto the tooth surface, flowing into the grooves and pits.

4

Curing

A special curing light hardens the sealant in seconds, creating a durable protective coating.

5

Bite Check

We check your bite to ensure the sealant doesn't interfere with your normal chewing.

Is This Right for Me?

Who Is a Good Candidate?

Sealants are most beneficial for children when their permanent molars first erupt (around ages 6 and 12). Adults without existing decay or fillings in their back teeth can also benefit. We'll evaluate whether sealants are appropriate for you or your child at your next exam.
