Oral Exams

Comprehensive dental examinations to assess your oral health and catch problems early.

A comprehensive oral exam is the cornerstone of preventive dental care at Grandville Dental Health Center. During your exam, Dr. Bishop or Dr. Vander Baan will thoroughly evaluate your teeth, gums, bite, jaw joints, and oral tissues — giving you a complete picture of your oral health.

Regular oral exams allow us to detect cavities, gum disease, oral cancer, and other issues at their earliest and most treatable stages. We recommend a comprehensive exam for all new patients and periodic exams at every cleaning appointment.

What to Expect

The Process

1

Medical & Dental History Review

We review your health history, medications, and any concerns about your oral health.

2

Digital X-Rays

Digital radiographs reveal decay between teeth, bone levels, and structures not visible to the naked eye.

3

Oral Cancer Screening

A visual and tactile examination of all oral tissues — tongue, cheeks, throat, lips, and floor of the mouth.

4

Periodontal Evaluation

We measure gum pocket depths and assess gum tissue health to check for signs of gum disease.

5

Tooth-by-Tooth Examination

Each tooth is carefully examined for decay, cracks, wear, and the condition of existing restorations.

6

Bite & TMJ Assessment

We evaluate bite alignment and check for signs of TMJ dysfunction or bruxism.

7

Treatment Plan Discussion

We review findings with you, answer questions, and discuss any recommended treatment.

Who Is a Good Candidate?

Oral exams are recommended for all patients — new patients establishing care, and existing patients at every cleaning appointment. We recommend a comprehensive exam every 1–2 years, with periodic exams at your regular cleaning appointments.
